UK arts survey finds women see gender inequality and age bias

A recent survey of 76 arts professionals has highlighted persistent gender and age discrimination within the creative sector. The report, released as an exclusive, argues that the industry remains overly focused on “young and emerging” talent, leaving many women feeling sidelined as they advance in their careers.

According to the findings, 95 % of women in the arts believe gender inequality still exists, and 75 % report experiencing unconscious bias or sexism. Age is cited as a significant barrier, with 69 % of respondents saying it negatively impacts their career progress; the figure rises to 100 % among those in purely artistic roles compared to managerial positions. The data suggest that both gender and age intersect to limit opportunities for women in the field.

These results underscore the need for systemic change in hiring and promotion practices within the arts. While the report stops short of prescribing solutions, it calls on industry stakeholders to address the entrenched focus on youth and to implement policies that promote equitable representation across all career stages.
