UK Ambassador Remembers Late Emir of Qatar

Former United Kingdom ambassador to Qatar, Sir Graham Boyce, paid tribute to the late Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away on 13 December 2013. During his tenure in Doha from 2013 to 2018, Boyce had worked closely with the Emir’s administration, witnessing the Emir’s leadership of Qatar’s rapid economic diversification and diplomatic outreach. The Emir, who had ruled from 1995 until his abdication in favour of his son Sheikh Tamim in 2013, was widely recognised for steering the country through a period of significant growth and for fostering stronger ties with the United Kingdom.

In a statement released by the British Embassy in Doha, Boyce reflected on the Emir’s commitment to modernising Qatar’s infrastructure and expanding its international partnerships. He noted that the late Sheikh’s vision had helped position Qatar as a key player in regional politics and a major contributor to global humanitarian efforts. Boyce also highlighted the enduring friendship between the UK and Qatar, citing joint initiatives in education, trade and security that were initiated during the Emir’s reign.

The tribute underscores the lasting impact of Sheikh Hamad’s leadership on Qatar’s development and its bilateral relations with the United Kingdom.
