Uganda discharges final Ebola patient as outbreak wanes

Uganda discharged its last confirmed Ebola patient from a treatment centre roughly two weeks ago, signalling the conclusion of the country’s most recent Sudan ebolavirus outbreak. The patient, who had been receiving care at the Mubende isolation facility since early October, tested negative on consecutive samples before being cleared for release, according to the Ministry of Health.

The outbreak, first identified in September, resulted in 164 confirmed cases and 77 deaths across several districts, prompting a coordinated response that included contact tracing, community engagement, and the deployment of the WHO‑endorsed rVSV‑ZEBOV vaccine for frontline workers and high‑risk contacts. With no new cases reported for 42 days, the World Health Organization has declared the outbreak over, while Ugandan authorities continue routine surveillance and preparedness activities to prevent resurgence.
