UC Riverside study finds pesticides alter Argentine ant behavior before worker death
Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have found that an increase in ant activity following the deployment of pesticide traps does not necessarily indicate a failed treatment. The study, published in the journal *Environmental Entomology*, tracked the movement of chemical agents through ant colonies and observed that sublethal exposure altered foraging patterns, causing workers to increase surface activity before the poison reaches lethal concentrations throughout the nest.
The findings suggest that pest‑management professionals should interpret a temporary surge in ant presence as a behavioral response to the dispersal of toxins rather than a sign of resistance or ineffective control. By recognizing that chemicals propagate through the colony over time, operators can allow the treatment to complete its action cycle, reducing the likelihood of premature re‑application and improving overall efficacy in ant suppression programs.
