UC researchers create AI system to detect fruit hidden in foliage
University of Canterbury’s computer science department has unveiled a new AI-driven computer‑vision system capable of locating, measuring and monitoring fruit concealed within dense foliage. The project, known as UC Vision, is headed by Professor Richard Green and is being advanced by researcher Dr. Richie Ellingham, whose work focuses on applying machine‑learning techniques to agricultural challenges.
The technology combines deep‑learning algorithms with high‑resolution imaging to differentiate fruit from surrounding leaves and branches, enabling precise yield estimation and targeted harvesting strategies. Early trials have demonstrated reliable detection of apples and kiwifruit in orchard environments, suggesting broader applicability across varied crops. UC Vision is slated for further field testing later this year, with the aim of delivering commercially viable tools that enhance productivity and reduce labor costs for growers.
