Typhoon Bavi downgraded to severe tropical storm after landfall in eastern China

Typhoon Bavi weakened to a severe tropical storm on Sunday after striking eastern China, prompting authorities to evacuate almost two million residents from the affected provinces. The storm’s landfall brought sustained winds of up to 120 km/h and heavy rainfall, leading to widespread flooding in coastal and inland areas.

Meteorological agencies reported that Bavi’s central pressure rose from 970 hPa at peak intensity to 985 hPa as it moved inland, marking the downgrade. Local governments activated emergency plans, closed schools, and rerouted traffic to reduce risk. Early warnings and the mass evacuation helped limit casualties, though several villages reported damaged infrastructure and power outages.

The Chinese Meteorological Administration continues to monitor the storm’s remnants as it moves toward the interior. While the immediate threat has subsided, authorities remain on alert for secondary hazards such as landslides and waterborne disease outbreaks as the region recovers.
