Two hydropower workers rescued after nine days trapped in Nepal tunnel

The Nepal Army released images on Monday confirming that two workers from a hydropower construction site have been rescued alive after being trapped for nine days in a tunnel that was buried by floodwaters in Rasuwa district. The tunnel, part of a project aimed at expanding the region’s electricity generation capacity, collapsed following heavy rains that caused a sudden surge of water, sealing the entrance and leaving the workers unable to escape.

Rescue teams, including army engineers and local fire services, employed specialized equipment to locate and reach the victims, who were found in a partially collapsed section of the tunnel. After careful extraction, both workers were airlifted to a nearby medical facility for evaluation. The operation concluded without further casualties, and authorities are assessing the structural damage to determine the next steps for the hydropower project.
