Turkey Secures 1 Million Barrels Per Day of Iraqi Oil
Ankara is poised to receive up to one million barrels of Iraqi crude each day after Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) secured a stake in the BP‑operated Kirkuk oilfield. The agreement, announced by Turkey’s energy ministry, gives TPAO a 10‑percent participation in the field’s output, which is slated to rise as Iraq lifts production quotas and modernises its export infrastructure. The deal also includes provisions for the oil to be transported through existing pipelines that link Kirkuk to the Turkish border, allowing the volume to be integrated into Turkey’s domestic supply chain.
The arrangement is expected to bolster Turkey’s energy security while providing Iraq with a reliable outlet for its increased output. Officials from both countries indicated that the first shipments could begin later this year, contingent on finalising export licences and pipeline capacity upgrades. The partnership reflects broader regional cooperation on energy trade, aligning with Iraq’s goal of expanding crude exports and Turkey’s aim to diversify its import sources.
