Tumor biology may guide mantle cell lymphoma treatment decisions

Treatment decisions for mantle‑cell lymphoma (MCL) have traditionally been driven primarily by a patient’s age, despite the disease’s wide spectrum ranging from indolent to highly aggressive forms. In a recent peer‑reviewed article, Ingrid Glimelius and colleagues argue that therapeutic strategies should also incorporate the biological characteristics of the lymphoma, allowing clinicians to tailor interventions more precisely.

The authors propose that patients identified as having high‑risk, aggressive disease receive more intensive therapy earlier in their treatment course, while those with indolent disease avoid unnecessary escalation. By aligning treatment intensity with disease biology rather than age alone, the approach aims to improve outcomes for high‑risk patients and reduce treatment‑related toxicity for those with slower‑growing disease.
