Trump says US defence pact with Denmark gives permanent control of Greenland

Denmark and its autonomous territory Greenland are set to sign a defence agreement with the United States next week, contingent on ratification by both the Danish and Greenlandic parliaments. The pact, announced by officials in Copenhagen, will formalise cooperation on security matters in the Arctic region and outline joint training, intelligence sharing, and infrastructure use by U.S. forces stationed in Greenland.

The agreement follows a series of diplomatic discussions aimed at strengthening NATO’s northern flank amid heightened geopolitical interest in the Arctic. Both legislative bodies are scheduled to vote on the treaty before the planned signing ceremony, after which the partnership is expected to become operational, enhancing collective defence capabilities while respecting Greenland’s self‑governance framework.
