Trump pledges investigation of EU fines on US tech firms

The White House announced Tuesday that President Joe Biden believes the recent antitrust penalties imposed on Google, Apple, Meta and Amazon should be “entirely reversed.” In a briefing with senior officials, the president said the fines undermine the United States’ competitive landscape and could hinder innovation across the technology sector.

The penalties in question stem from separate investigations by the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice that concluded the four companies engaged in practices deemed to restrict competition. The FTC levied a $2.5 billion fine against Google for alleged search‑engine bias, while the DOJ secured a $1.2 billion sanction against Apple over App Store restrictions. Meta faced a $1.8 billion penalty for preferential treatment of its own advertising services, and Amazon was fined $1.5 billion for alleged abuse of its marketplace dominance.
