Trump administration to drop Reflecting Pool charges against David Hearn

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, a former Trump administration appointee, confirmed that the recent peeling of sealant observed on the exterior of the federal courthouse in Manhattan was caused by a “botched installation.” In a statement released to the media on Tuesday, Pirro said the Department of Justice’s facilities division had conducted an internal review after contractors reported premature deterioration of the sealant applied during the building’s 2022 renovation. The review found that improper surface preparation and failure to follow manufacturer specifications led to the adhesive’s loss of adhesion, prompting the visible flaking and raising concerns about potential water intrusion.

The Department of Justice has ordered an immediate remediation plan, which includes removing the defective sealant, re‑preparing the affected surfaces, and applying a new, compliant coating under the supervision of a certified specialist. Contractors involved in the original work have been notified and are cooperating with the oversight team to prevent further issues. The agency expects the corrective measures to be completed within the next six weeks, ensuring the courthouse remains secure and functional for ongoing judicial operations.
