Tree Coexistence in Old Growth Forests
Forests are organized around a fundamental rule of light competition: the tallest trees capture the most sunlight, casting deep shade beneath their canopies and making the understory inhospitable for shorter saplings. During the stem‑exclusion phase of forest succession, this dynamic often leads to the decline or death of smaller individuals as they are outcompeted for light.
