Toronto Zoo Welcomes Third Pygmy Hippo Calf

The Toronto Zoo announced that its 20‑year‑old pygmy hippo, Kind I, gave birth to a female calf on Sunday morning. Observers first noted signs of labor at about 8:15 a.m., and after roughly four hours the calf’s feet emerged. The birthing process continued for another 1½ hours before the new pygmy hippo was delivered successfully.

Zoo officials highlighted that the survival rates for pygmy hippos remain low, so the newborn is currently under close monitoring. The birth adds to the zoo’s ongoing efforts to support this endangered species, which faces significant challenges in both captive and wild populations.
