Togo rangers and locals rally to protect Fazao-Malfakassa National Park

A small group of travelers recently journeyed to Fazao‑Malfakassa National Park, Togo’s last remaining large protected area, and stayed at the historic Hotel Fazao. The hotel, which opened in 1980, was originally staffed by a professional chef employed by the uncle of one of the visitors, and has since served as a base for tourists drawn to the park’s notable populations of elephants, monkeys and other wildlife. For decades the park was administered by the Swiss Franz Weber Foundation, a conservation organization that oversaw habitat protection and visitor services throughout the region.

The visit highlights the enduring appeal of the park’s biodiversity and the role of Hotel Fazao in supporting eco‑tourism. While the Franz Weber Foundation’s management has since transitioned to local authorities, the hotel continues to accommodate international guests seeking guided wildlife experiences within the park’s boundaries. The continued operation of both the park and the hotel underscores Togo’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage and promoting sustainable tourism.
