Thune, Trump, Senate Conservatives Reach Deal to Postpone Budget Vote

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R‑S.D.), President Trump, and a coalition of Senate conservatives struck a deal Friday night that will postpone a vote on the current budget resolution and defer action on most provisions of the SAVE America Act until after the August recess. The agreement ended a weeks‑long dispute among Republican senators over the timing and scope of fiscal policy measures.

Under the compromise, the budget resolution will be set aside for the time being, while the SAVE America Act—an expansive package that includes tax cuts, spending limits, and regulatory reforms—will not be brought to the floor until the Senate reconvenes. Conservative senators such as Ron Johnson (R‑Wis.) and others who had opposed an immediate vote agreed to the delay in exchange for assurances that the core elements of the act would remain on the legislative agenda.
