Taiwan Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim Visits Europe for Democracy Conference

European Parliament vice‑president Pina Picierno said that the recent trip of Taiwanese official Hsiao Bi‑khim to Brussels was deliberately kept confidential until the delegation arrived, a measure taken to safeguard her participation in a series of high‑level meetings. The visit, which took place earlier this week, included discussions with members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs and a briefing on trade and security cooperation between the European Union and Taiwan.

Picierno explained that the secrecy was intended to mitigate the risk of external pressure, particularly from the People’s Republic of China, which has historically opposed official contacts with Taipei. The agenda focused on strengthening economic ties, enhancing supply‑chain resilience, and exploring joint initiatives on technology and climate policy. EU officials emphasized that the meeting underscores a growing willingness within the bloc to engage more openly with Taiwan, while also noting that future interactions will continue to be coordinated through established diplomatic channels.
