Taiwan launches annual Han Kuang war games as Chinese pressure rises

Taiwan launched its annual “Han Kuang” military exercises on Wednesday, conducting the island’s largest drill to sharpen readiness for a potential Chinese invasion. The exercises, which have been held every year since 1978, involve large‑scale maneuvers across air, sea, and land forces, and are designed to test command, control, and interoperability among Taiwan’s armed forces.

The drills come amid escalating Chinese military activity around Taiwan, including increased naval patrols and air sorties in the Taiwan Strait. Beijing continues to assert that Taiwan is an inseparable part of its territory and has warned that it will use force if necessary to achieve reunification. In response, Taiwan’s leadership has repeatedly emphasized that the exercises are defensive in nature and aimed at deterring aggression.

The “Han Kuang” exercises conclude in early October, after which Taiwan will resume peacetime operations. The event underscores the heightened security tensions in the region and the ongoing strategic competition between Taipei and Beijing.
