Sydney Marathon medals feature incorrect German stadium engraving

Runners participating in the 2026 Sydney Marathon will be presented with a commemorative medal that bears an engraving of Germany’s iconic Olympiastadion in Berlin. The decision, announced by the event’s organizing committee in March, aims to celebrate the marathon’s growing international partnerships and to highlight the historic venue’s architectural legacy.

The medal, produced by a local Australian mint in collaboration with German design firm Studio Kraft, features a detailed relief of the Olympiastadion’s distinctive sweeping roof and the 1936 Olympic rings, alongside the Sydney Harbour Bridge motif on the reverse side. Organizers said the dual‑nation motif reflects the marathon’s inclusion of a “global circuit” segment, which will see elite athletes from Europe and Australia compete side by side. The 2026 race, scheduled for October 10, is expected to attract over 15,000 participants, and the new medal will be awarded to all finishers as a token of the event’s cross‑continental collaboration.
