Superworms Show Potential in Skeleton Cleaning
A study published in *PLOS One* reveals that superworms, beetle larvae commonly used as pet food, demonstrate remarkable efficiency in cleaning animal skeletons. Researchers led by Fatemeh Rastekar of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran, found that superworms (*Zophobas morio*) can remove soft tissue from carcasses with precision, leaving behind clean bones. The study highlights their potential as a tool in forensic science and archaeological research, where rapid and thorough skeletonization is required.
The team conducted controlled experiments, comparing superworms to other insect species used for decomposition, such as mealworms and black soldier fly larvae. Superworms outperformed these species in tissue removal speed and cleanliness, achieving an average of 89% removal efficiency within 30 days. Their effectiveness is attributed to their ability to consume both soft tissue and cartilage, coupled with a slower metabolism that allows extended feeding periods. The findings suggest superworms could streamline processes in forensic investigations, where time-sensitive analysis of remains is critical.
The study underscores the practical applications of entomology in scientific fields, offering a cost-effective and scalable method for skeleton preparation. While further research is needed to assess environmental or ethical considerations, the results position superworms as a promising alternative to traditional cleaning methods, which often involve chemicals or manual labor.
