Sudanese refugee rebuilds life in Spain as war continues at home

A 22‑year‑old Sudanese refugee has begun rebuilding his life in Madrid after fleeing the conflict that erupted in Sudan in 2023. He arrived in Spain on a humanitarian visa in early 2024, was granted asylum by the Ministry of the Interior, and was placed in a reception centre that provides temporary housing and legal assistance.

Since his arrival, the young man has enrolled in a Spanish language course offered by a local non‑governmental organization and has started an apprenticeship in a small family‑run bakery. The programme, funded by the European Union’s refugee integration fund, includes vocational training, counseling and assistance with obtaining a work permit. While he reports steady progress in adapting to his new environment, the ongoing war in Sudan prevents him from contacting his parents and younger siblings, who remain in the Darfur region and have not been able to secure safe passage out of the country.

Despite the distance from his family, the refugee’s case manager notes that his integration trajectory is on schedule, and he plans to apply for permanent residency later this year. Continued instability in Sudan, however, means reunification with his relatives remains uncertain, underscoring the broader challenges faced by displaced Sudanese nationals seeking stability abroad.
