Sudan Army Regains Control of Al Sadarat Highway

Khartoum‑based officials from Sudan’s army announced on Tuesday that they have re‑established full control over the Al Sadarat highway, the main arterial road that connects the capital with the central city of El Obeid. The statement, issued by the army’s public relations office, said that security forces had cleared the route of all opposition elements and restored the flow of civilian and military traffic after a series of clashes that had intermittently blocked the thoroughfare over the past week.

The Al Sadarat corridor is a critical supply line for both humanitarian aid and military logistics, linking the densely populated western region with the capital’s markets and ports. Its temporary disruption had heightened concerns about the delivery of food, medical supplies and fuel to communities along the route, while also limiting the army’s ability to move troops and equipment. The army’s claim of regained control follows a broader pattern of shifting frontlines in the ongoing conflict between Sudan’s regular forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which has seen frequent battles over key transport arteries since the fighting escalated in April 2023. Authorities said the restored security will facilitate the resumption of normal commercial activity and aid distribution, though they cautioned that the situation remains volatile and that monitoring would continue.
