Study shows great apes kiss and cuddle to maintain peace
Scientists have discovered that certain ape species engage in pre‑event hugging—a form of physical contact—before facing stressful situations, suggesting an ancient mechanism for building trust. The observation, made during a controlled study of wild chimpanzees and bonobos, recorded pairs of individuals wrapping their arms around one another shortly before a simulated threat such as a sudden loud noise or the arrival of a predator model. Researchers noted that the hugging bouts were brief, occurring within seconds of the impending stimulus, and were followed by coordinated responses that reduced individual stress indicators.
The study, published in the journal *Primates*, involved continuous video monitoring and physiological measurements, including heart rate and cortisol levels. Findings indicate that the act of hugging serves to reinforce social bonds and signal cooperation, thereby mitigating anxiety when a group faces a common danger. The researchers compared these behaviors to other affiliative gestures, such as grooming, and found that hugging was more prevalent in situations where immediate collective action was required. This suggests that the gesture may have evolved as a rapid, nonverbal cue to synchronize group behavior.
