Study Sets Ecological Threshold for Boreal Forest Clearcutting to Protect Birds
A research team from the University of Jyväskylä in Finland has identified, for the first time, an ecological threshold for clearcutting in boreal forests that is necessary to preserve bird species dependent on old‑growth habitats. The study, which examined forest management practices across the region, found that maintaining viable populations of these specialist birds requires either extending the average forest rotation period to at least 90 years or designating roughly 20 % of the forested area as a permanent exclusion zone from clearcut operations.
The findings offer a concrete benchmark for policymakers and forest managers aiming to balance timber production with biodiversity conservation. By adopting either longer rotation cycles or setting aside a fifth of the landscape from intensive logging, the boreal ecosystem can sustain its characteristic avian communities while still supporting sustainable forest use.
