Study links xylitol sweetener to higher risk of strokes and heart attacks
A large‑scale epidemiological study has found that elevated blood concentrations of xylitol, a sugar‑alcohol sweetener, are associated with a heightened risk of major cardiovascular events, including stroke, heart attack and premature death. The analysis, described as the biggest investigation of its kind, measured xylitol levels in participants and tracked health outcomes over several years, revealing a statistically significant correlation between high xylitol exposure and adverse cardiovascular outcomes.
Xylitol occurs naturally in minute quantities in certain fruits and vegetables, but it is commonly added to a wide range of consumer products—such as chewing gum, toothpaste, jam, yoghurts and ice‑cream—often at concentrations up to a thousand times greater than its natural presence. The study’s findings suggest that regular consumption of these fortified items may lead to measurable increases in circulating xylitol, potentially contributing to the observed risk. Researchers recommend further clinical trials to clarify causality and to assess whether regulatory guidelines for xylitol use should be revisited.
