Study links high blood tyrosine levels to shorter lifespan in men
A study of more than 270,000 participants has identified a correlation between elevated blood levels of the amino acid tyrosine and reduced life expectancy in men. Researchers reported that men with higher circulating tyrosine lived, on average, nearly a year less than those with lower levels, while the same association was not observed in women.
The analysis combined observational data with genetic approaches to assess causality, confirming that the relationship persisted after accounting for lifestyle and health variables. Tyrosine, a component of protein‑rich foods and a common dietary supplement marketed for enhanced focus and mental performance, appears to have a gender‑specific impact on longevity according to the findings.
The results suggest that monitoring tyrosine intake and blood concentrations could become a consideration in male health assessments, although further research is needed to clarify the underlying mechanisms and to determine whether dietary modifications might influence the observed risk.
