Study links gum disease bacteria to calcific aortic valve stenosis
Researchers have identified a possible link between periodontal bacteria and the development of calcific aortic valve stenosis, a condition characterized by the thickening and calcium deposition of the aortic valve that can lead to heart failure. The study, conducted by a team of microbiologists and cardiologists, found that bacterial species commonly associated with gum disease can trigger inflammatory responses and promote calcium accumulation within the valve tissue, suggesting a mechanistic pathway from oral infection to cardiac valve pathology.
