Study links ADHD to higher risk of digestive disorders
A large-scale analysis of health data involving more than 1.9 million individuals has identified a strong link between attention‑deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and several digestive disorders. The study found that people diagnosed with ADHD are nearly twice as likely to experience constipation, have a 58 % higher probability of irritable bowel syndrome, and face more than four times the odds of encopresis compared with those without the condition.
These findings suggest that ADHD may be a significant risk factor for gastrointestinal problems, highlighting the need for clinicians to monitor digestive health in patients with the disorder. Further research is expected to explore underlying mechanisms and to assess whether targeted interventions could reduce the prevalence of these comorbid conditions.
