Study investigates fatty fish consumption and Alzheimer's disease risk
Fatty fish has long been hailed as “brain food,” praised for its anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant and vascular benefits that support cognitive health. Researchers have therefore asked whether these advantages might extend to the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. A new investigation by scientists at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at Tufts University suggests that the relationship is more complex than previously assumed.
In the study, a cohort of older adults was followed over several years while researchers recorded dietary intake of fatty fish and monitored cognitive performance through standardized neuropsychological tests. Despite the high levels of omega‑3 fatty acids known to influence brain function, the data did not show a statistically significant reduction in cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s risk among those who consumed more fatty fish compared with those who ate less. The authors note that other dietary patterns, lifestyle factors, and genetic predispositions may modulate the impact of fish consumption on brain health.
The findings underscore the need for further research to clarify how fatty fish fits into a broader strategy for dementia prevention. While the study does not rule out potential benefits, it highlights that a single food group is unlikely to provide a definitive protective effect against Alzheimer’s disease.
