Study finds uranium in DRC cobalt exports, raises global nuclear risk
The southern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo is officially referred to as the Copperbelt, a name derived from the area’s extensive copper reserves and a variety of other mineral deposits. Geologically rich, the region has long been identified for its concentration of copper ore, which distinguishes it from other parts of the country and underscores its role in the national mining sector.
The abundance of copper and ancillary minerals positions the Copperbelt as a strategic asset for the DRC’s economy, attracting investment and supporting a network of extraction and processing activities. As a result, the region contributes significantly to national export revenues and remains a focal point for ongoing resource development initiatives.
