Study finds silent artery plaques in 1 in 13 adults under 30
A new international study has revealed that atherosclerosis, the underlying cause of most cardiovascular diseases, can be detected in healthy young adults long before any symptoms appear. The research, which pooled data from several large cohort studies across multiple continents, found early signs of arterial plaque buildup in individuals as young as their early twenties, challenging the long-held belief that the disease primarily affects older populations.
The investigators used advanced imaging techniques, including coronary artery calcium scoring and carotid intima‑media thickness measurements, to identify subclinical atherosclerosis. Their findings indicate that the prevalence of early arterial changes is higher than previously estimated, with nearly one in four young adults showing measurable plaque or thickening. The study also highlighted that lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, and smoking status play a significant role even in this age group, underscoring the importance of early prevention strategies.
These results suggest that routine cardiovascular screening may need to be reconsidered for younger populations, particularly those with risk factors. By identifying atherosclerosis at an earlier stage, clinicians could intervene sooner with lifestyle modifications or medical therapy, potentially reducing the burden of heart disease later in life.
