Study Finds No Link Between Acetaminophen Use During Pregnancy and Adverse Birth Outcomes
The University of North Carolina’s School of Public Health has released a new study that found no statistically significant link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes. The research was prompted by growing public concern and conflicting evidence from earlier studies regarding the safety of the common pain reliever and fever reducer when taken by expectant mothers. By examining a large, population‑based cohort, the investigators aimed to clarify whether acetaminophen exposure increases the risk of complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight, or congenital anomalies.
Using data from state birth registries and prescription claims, the study followed over 70,000 pregnancies, categorizing exposure by trimester and dosage. Multivariate regression models adjusted for maternal age, smoking status, pre‑existing medical conditions, and socioeconomic factors. The analysis revealed no significant association between acetaminophen use and any of the primary adverse outcomes, and the confidence intervals consistently crossed the null value. Researchers noted that while the study’s observational design limits causal inference, the large sample size and rigorous adjustment for confounders strengthen the reliability of the findings.
These results provide reassurance to clinicians and pregnant patients who rely on acetaminophen for pain and fever management. The authors caution that further research, particularly randomized controlled trials or mechanistic studies, could help confirm safety across different dosing regimens.
