Study Finds Migratory Birds Carry Few Diplostomum Parasites Between North Atlantic Islands
A recent study published in the *Journal of Helminthology* reports that Diplostomum parasites exhibit surprisingly limited dispersal across North Atlantic islands, contrary to the prevailing belief that migratory birds serve as efficient long‑distance transporters of these trematodes. The research, conducted by scientists from the Estonian University of Life Sciences and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, was carried out in collaboration with teams in Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Using genetic sequencing and field sampling from multiple island populations, the investigators found that parasite lineages were largely confined to their local host communities, with very few shared genotypes between islands.
