Study finds less than 25% of sponsorship relationships effectively boost career advancement
A new research report released today highlights the pivotal role of sponsorship in advancing to senior leadership positions, noting that it provides individuals with practical insight into how career progression operates within organizations. The study underscores that sponsorship, distinct from mentorship, involves a sponsor actively advocating for the protégé’s visibility and opportunities, thereby accelerating their professional trajectory.
However, the report also reveals a significant shortfall in the quality of sponsorship relationships. Less than 25 percent of the examined sponsorships exhibit the essential elements of mutual trust, candid feedback, and proactive advocacy that are most effective at propelling leaders forward. The remaining majority of sponsorship arrangements lack these critical components, limiting their impact on career development.
The findings suggest that organizations must prioritize cultivating high‑quality sponsorship programs, emphasizing trust, open communication, and active promotion of protégés. By doing so, companies can better harness sponsorship as a strategic tool for developing the next generation of senior leaders.
