Study finds fungal toxins in all UK plant‑based meat alternatives tested
A study conducted by a UK research team examined 212 plant‑based meat alternatives and beverages and found that every sample contained at least one naturally occurring fungal toxin. The analysis, which covered a range of products marketed as meat‑free and dairy‑free options, reported that the detected toxin concentrations were all below the maximum limits set by European Union food‑safety guidelines.
Researchers highlighted that, while the individual toxin levels comply with current regulatory standards, the presence of these compounds across the entire product category raises questions about cumulative exposure for consumers who regularly consume large quantities of plant‑based foods. The team called for ongoing monitoring and further investigation into long‑term dietary intake patterns to assess whether repeated exposure could approach levels of health concern.
