Study Finds Bumblebees Exhibit Emotion‑Like Behaviours
A team of researchers has documented that bumblebees display “emotion‑like” behaviors previously attributed only to mammals. The findings, published in the journal *Animal Cognition*, stem from experiments in which bees were subjected to mild stressors such as brief cooling and then offered choices between rewarding and neutral flower patches. Bees that experienced the stressor showed a marked reduction in foraging activity and a heightened tendency to avoid novel flowers, patterns the authors liken to anxiety‑like and pessimistic responses observed in rodents.
The study employed automated tracking to quantify changes in flight speed, visitation frequency, and decision latency, comparing stressed individuals with a control group. Results indicated that the stressed bees not only altered their immediate foraging strategy but also retained a negative bias in subsequent trials, suggesting a lasting internal state rather than a fleeting reflex. Researchers caution that while the behaviors resemble affective states, further work is needed to determine the underlying neural mechanisms. The discovery expands the scope of comparative emotion research and may inform pollinator management practices by highlighting how environmental stressors influence bee cognition and behavior.
