Study Examines Employee Biological Clocks and Cooperation
A new study reveals that employees' circadian rhythms influence not only their personal work habits but also their willingness and ability to support colleagues, reshaping traditional understandings of workplace collaboration. Published in *Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes*, the research introduces "time-extension self-efficacy" (TESE), a measure of an individual’s confidence in adjusting their sleep schedule to wake earlier or stay awake later than typical. The findings suggest that TESE significantly impacts how employees engage in prosocial behaviors, such as assisting peers outside their usual working hours or adapting their schedules to accommodate team needs.
The study, conducted across multiple industries, observed that individuals with higher TESE were more likely to extend their work hours to help others, regardless of their inherent chronotype—whether they are naturally inclined toward mornings or nights. For instance, early risers with strong TESE often stayed later to support colleagues, while night owls adjusted their schedules to assist morning-focused teams. Researchers emphasize that TESE is distinct from personality traits like conscientiousness, instead reflecting a person’s belief in their capacity to flex their biological clock. The results highlight the interplay between personal agency and workplace dynamics, suggesting that fostering TESE could enhance team cohesion and productivity.
The research underscores the importance of aligning organizational policies with employees’ perceived ability to adapt their time. While flexible work arrangements are increasingly common, the study implies that supporting employees in developing TESE—through training or scheduling strategies—could further optimize collaborative outcomes.
