Stripe abandons $50 billion effort to acquire PayPal

A consortium led by private‑equity firm Advent International and payments platform Stripe has halted its effort to acquire PayPal, Bloomberg reported on Monday. The group, which had been evaluating a bid for the online‑payments company for several months, decided to drop the pursuit after concluding that the transaction would be unlikely to meet the financial and regulatory criteria required for a successful closing.

Industry analysts noted that the decision reflects heightened scrutiny of large fintech mergers and PayPal’s recent earnings volatility, which have complicated valuation discussions. The withdrawal leaves PayPal to continue its strategic focus on expanding its merchant services and strengthening its position in the competitive digital‑payments market, while Advent and Stripe may redirect resources toward other growth initiatives.
