Stephen Fleming appointed England Test coach

Stephen Fleming is expected to be appointed England’s new Test coach, joining former teammate Brendon McCullum who will continue to lead the white‑ball side. The 53‑year‑old has been in a series of interviews with the England and Wales Cricket Board over the past fortnight, and his candidacy has been welcomed by the ECB after McCullum’s dismissal as Test coach a day earlier.

Fleming recently stepped down as head coach of the Chennai Super Kings and their SA20 and Major League Cricket subsidiaries, following a disappointing eighth‑place finish in this year’s IPL and a last‑place campaign in 2025. His coaching résumé includes stints with New Zealand’s national team and a record of success in franchise cricket, which the ECB cited as key reasons for his selection. He is slated to begin his role ahead of England’s South Africa tour in December.

With Fleming taking the Test reins, England will have a seasoned leader familiar with the pressures of international cricket, while McCullum will focus on the limited‑overs format.
