Starcloud Announces Alpha Centauri Probe Mission

Starcloud, the company that has built a network of orbital data centers to support global broadband and cloud services, has announced a new high‑risk venture: the launch of a deep‑space probe aimed at the Alpha Centauri system. The project, dubbed “Project Aurora,” is slated to launch from Cape Canaveral in 2028 and will travel at a fraction of the speed of light, using a nuclear pulse propulsion system that the company claims could reach the nearest star system in roughly 80 years.

The probe will carry a suite of scientific instruments designed to study the exoplanets Proxima b and the binary stars Alpha Centauri A and B, as well as a communications payload that will relay data back to Earth via a relay network of satellites. Starcloud’s chief technology officer noted that the mission represents the company’s largest risk to date, citing the challenges of interstellar navigation, power management, and the need to maintain contact over a distance of 4.37 light‑years. Funding for the project comes from a mix of private investment and a government grant aimed at advancing interstellar research.

If successful, Project Aurora would mark the first human‑made object to leave the solar system and could open a new era of interstellar exploration. Starcloud plans to release a detailed technical brief in the coming months, and the company has indicated that it will continue to develop the probe’s propulsion and communication systems in partnership with leading aerospace research institutions.
