Sri Lanka Schools Shut After Floods, Mudslides

Torrential rains and flooding have damaged 129 houses and forced the evacuation of nearly 3,500 residents, officials reported on Monday. The severe weather, which struck the region late Thursday night, caused rivers to overflow and low‑lying streets to become impassable, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency and activate rescue teams.

Emergency services have set up temporary shelters, distributed food and water, and begun assessments of structural damage. Utility crews are working to restore power and safe drinking water, while the Red Cross and other NGOs are providing medical assistance and counseling to displaced families. Officials said the evacuation will continue until floodwaters recede and damaged homes can be deemed safe for re‑occupation.
