Spain wildfires near Madrid and Toledo create difficult night for firefighters

FRANCE 24’s Madrid correspondent Sarah Morris reported that authorities described the night as “difficult” for firefighters battling rapidly spreading wildfires on the outskirts of Madrid and near Toledo. The blazes, ignited by strong winds and dry conditions, engulfed scrubland and forested areas across the Castilla‑La Mancha region, prompting the deployment of dozens of ground crews, aerial water‑dropping units and emergency services to contain the flames.

Officials said the fire fronts advanced despite coordinated efforts, forcing the evacuation of several small villages and the temporary closure of a major highway linking the two cities. By early morning, the fire‑fighting operation had secured a partial perimeter around the most active zones, and no fatalities were reported, although a number of residents sustained minor injuries while fleeing. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, emphasizing that the combination of high temperatures and gusty winds could prolong the containment effort.
