Spain builds tent cities for the thousands stuck in Ceuta

Spain is constructing four temporary reception sites in Ceuta, with a total capacity of 1,500 places, to accommodate the estimated 5,000 migrants currently housed in the Spanish enclave. The new facilities aim to improve living conditions and streamline the processing of arrivals, which have surged in recent months.

The temporary sites will provide basic accommodation, medical care, and administrative support, allowing authorities to better manage the influx and reduce overcrowding in existing shelters. Officials say the expansion is part of a broader strategy to address the humanitarian and logistical challenges posed by the high number of migrants awaiting processing.

Once operational, the sites are expected to relieve pressure on Ceuta’s current infrastructure and help ensure that migrants receive timely assistance while their status is determined. The Spanish government will monitor the situation closely as the new facilities become active.
