The upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is slated to collide with the Moon early Wednesday, August 5. The impact follows a launch that failed to reach orbit, leaving the second stage on a trajectory that will intersect the lunar surface. SpaceX has confirmed that the stage will impact the Moon at a speed of roughly 2.5 km s⁻¹, a consequence of the vehicle’s failed ascent and the subsequent loss of attitude control.
The launch, which took place from Cape Canaveral’s Space Launch Complex 40, was intended to deploy a small satellite into low Earth orbit. After the first stage separated, the upper stage lost attitude control and failed to perform the final burn that would have placed it into a stable orbit. Engineers calculated that the most efficient disposal route for the stranded stage was a controlled impact on the Moon, thereby preventing debris from entering Earth orbit and reducing the risk of collision with operational spacecraft. The impact site was chosen to avoid the lunar south pole, where future missions are planned.
While the collision will not pose a threat to Earth or existing lunar missions, it underscores the importance of debris mitigation and the challenges of rapid response to launch failures. SpaceX’s decision to target the Moon reflects a growing industry practice of using celestial bodies as disposal targets for stranded upper stages, a strategy that could become more common as launch cadence increases.
