Southern Spain wildfire that killed 12 begins to ease

A wildfire raging in the southern Spanish province of Cádiz has killed at least 12 people and forced the evacuation of dozens of homes, officials said. The blaze, which ignited on Thursday amid high temperatures and strong winds, rapidly spread across scrubland and pine forests, prompting the deployment of more than 500 firefighters, aerial water bombers and military personnel. By Saturday, satellite imagery and ground reports indicated that the fire’s intensity was decreasing, allowing crews to move from indirect containment to a direct attack on the flames for the first time.

Authorities highlighted that the shift to a direct assault will enable a faster extinguishment of the remaining hotspots, though they warned that hot spots could persist for several days. The regional government has pledged additional resources to support recovery efforts and to investigate the cause of the fire, which is still under review.
