South Korea weighs military deployment to Strait of Hormuz

Seoul is weighing the possibility of deploying military assets to the Strait of Hormuz to help ensure freedom of navigation, local media reported Thursday. An official from the South Korean presidential office told reporters on Friday that the government is assessing “contributions” to United States security operations in the strategically vital waterway, but emphasized that no final decision has been made.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, carries a significant share of global oil shipments and has been a focal point of international security concerns. South Korea’s potential involvement would align with broader U.S.-led efforts to deter disruptions and protect commercial traffic, though the extent of any deployment remains under review.
