Smoking declines in Austria as youth vaping reaches 17.2%
Three extensive studies released this week confirm a paradox in tobacco use trends: while the overall prevalence of smoking continues to fall, the age at which individuals begin smoking is dropping, and the use of electronic vaping devices is rising sharply, particularly among children and adolescents. The research, which collectively surveyed millions of participants across multiple countries, found that the proportion of adults who smoke has reached historic lows, yet the median age of smoking initiation has shifted downward by several years compared with data from a decade ago.
The same data sets reveal a concurrent surge in vaping, with usage rates among those under 18 increasing by double‑digit percentages in the past five years. Public health officials note that the combination of earlier smoking initiation and heightened exposure to nicotine‑laden e‑cigarettes could offset gains made by declining adult smoking rates. The findings underscore the need for targeted prevention strategies aimed at younger populations to curb both traditional smoking and the growing popularity of vaping.
