Slovak village Vlkolinec seeks removal from UNESCO World Heritage List

Vlkolinec, a picturesque village in central Slovakia, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 for its well‑preserved medieval architecture and traditional wooden houses. In recent months the community has sparked controversy by formally requesting removal from the list, a move that has attracted national and international attention. The village council cited concerns that the designation imposes restrictive regulations on development and limits residents’ ability to adapt the built environment to contemporary needs.

A delegation from Deutsche Welle travelled to Vlkolinec to interview local officials, residents, and heritage experts. The report highlighted the tension between preserving cultural heritage and supporting sustainable economic growth.
