A new study has linked the nighttime coughing that often wakes partners to local air pollution levels, even when those levels are below the thresholds most people consider dangerous. Researchers from the University of Greenfield analyzed data from 1,200 households across five cities, correlating self‑reported sleep disturbances with real‑time measurements of particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). The findings show that nights with higher concentrations of these pollutants are associated with a 15‑percent increase in reports of coughing that disrupt sleep.
The research team controlled for common confounders such as smoking habits, presence of pets, and indoor ventilation. They found that the effect persisted even when outdoor pollution was within the “good” or “moderate” range on the Air Quality Index, suggesting that even low‑level exposure can trigger respiratory irritation. The study also noted that the phenomenon is more pronounced in older adults and individuals with asthma or allergies, underscoring the need for targeted public health messaging.
Public health officials are urged to consider these findings when issuing air‑quality advisories. While the study does not establish a direct causal pathway, it highlights the importance of indoor air quality and the potential for even modest outdoor pollution to affect sleep health.
