Actor David Tennant has called on Members of Parliament to support a national testing programme aimed at ensuring the safety of historic toxic dump sites across the United Kingdom. In a statement released to the press, Tennant urged MPs to act swiftly to address the long‑standing environmental health risks posed by these abandoned sites, many of which were used for industrial waste disposal during the mid‑20th century.

The call follows growing evidence that contaminated sites can leach hazardous substances into soil and groundwater, potentially exposing nearby communities to cancer‑causing agents and other health hazards. While local authorities currently conduct spot‑testing, there is no comprehensive, nationwide framework to assess all known dump sites. Tennant highlighted that a coordinated testing programme would provide a clearer picture of contamination levels, enable targeted remediation, and help prevent future exposure. He added that the actor’s involvement is intended to raise public awareness and pressure policymakers to prioritize the issue.

The government has yet to respond formally to Tennant’s appeal.
